There's Never A Catch.™
In 2022, Paul Taylor, the founder of Release Twenty-Two, embarked on a journey to establish this brand. He initiated this venture when he found himself at a juncture in life where it seemed as though the challenges and burdens were ceaselessly piling up, with no apparent means of escaping the mental, financial, and physical strains they imposed. Drawing upon his background in design, he aspired to discover a creative outlet that could not only help him navigate his personal difficulties by creating something new, but also foster an environment for others to unite around a shared idea of conquering their own challenges.
Before Release Twenty-Two became a concept, Paul aimed to capture the prevailing feeling that had gripped him so tightly — a sense of frustration, entangled in an apparently unbreakable cycle of no-win situations, in which he was unable to make a choice without dire consequences. He would later come to describe this feeling as a "catch-22." To liberate himself from this negative notion, with a renewed positive energy and mindset he channeled it into creating a clothing brand. This was not his first attempt, as he had previously ventured into a partnership that brought him immense joy but failed to gain traction.
However, after a heart-to-heart conversation with his sister, who encouraged him to embrace his creativity and carve his own path to success, he knew that establishing his own brand was the right course of action. Initially, he decided to name the brand after the very feeling he sought to escape, Catch-22. At the time, the name was a perfect match due to its personal significance, symbolizing his desire to break free from it, and the fact that the number 22 had held a special place in his heart since childhood. Yet, upon reflection, he realized that this name might not be conducive to helping him or others overcome those feelings; instead, it might serve as a constant reminder of them. As a result, he brainstormed several other names before concluding that he needed to represent the polar opposite of a catch-22. Thus, Release Twenty-Two (Release-22) was born. To further distance himself from the concept of a catch-22, he solidified the name by creating a motto: There’s Never A Catch.™

Founded in the heart of Detroit, Michigan, Release Twenty-Two is proud to call home to a city that has faced its own struggles but has never let those struggles define it, and continues to have unwavering resilience and innovation. From our brand colors to some of the implementations in our designs, we pay homage to Detroit and draw inspiration from its challenges and triumphs. While our roots are firmly planted in Detroit, our concepts and ideas extend across the globe, and our goal is to continue to build the R22 Community worldwide.
